How We Keep Skilled Care Safe at Home
Our Director of Nursing sets the protocols, verifies competency, and supervises the staff who carry them out. Families are welcome to ask any clinician to explain what they are doing and why.
Clinician Screening & Credentialing
Every nurse, therapist, and aide holds a current Florida licence or certification that we verify before assignment and re-check on renewal, along with Level 2 background screening, TB clearance, and current CPR certification. Staff self-screen for symptoms before every shift and do not enter a client home when unwell.
Hand Hygiene & Protective Equipment
Hand hygiene before and after every client contact. Gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection are carried to every visit and used according to the task — wound care, catheter care, tube feeding, and infusion each follow their own protocol, with sterile technique wherever the plan of care requires it.
Equipment, Supplies & Sharps
Stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, glucometers, and pulse oximeters are disinfected between clients with EPA-registered products. Needles and lancets go into an approved sharps container that we supply and dispose of; soiled dressings and infectious waste are bagged and removed per protocol. Clients never handle contaminated supplies.
Infection Prevention in the Home
For clients who are immunocompromised, on chemotherapy, or recovering from surgery, we teach the household how to limit exposure — visitor precautions, respiratory etiquette, safe food handling, and cleaning of high-touch surfaces. Nurses watch for early signs of wound, urinary, respiratory, and line infections and report them before they become an emergency.
Medication Safety
Nurses reconcile every prescription and over-the-counter product at the start of care and after each hospitalization, set up weekly medication organizers, verify the right drug, dose, route, and time at administration, and monitor for interactions and side effects. Where clients need help obtaining medications or supplies, we coordinate delivery to the home.
Fall Prevention & Home Safety
Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults at home. Our nurses and therapists assess lighting, flooring, stairs, bathrooms, and furniture layout, recommend grab bars and mobility equipment, and train the client and family in safe transfers and walking — then review it again as mobility changes.
Ongoing Clinical Training
Staff complete orientation and continuing education in infection control, medication safety, wound care, fall prevention, emergency response, HIPAA privacy, and client rights, with competencies reviewed by our Director of Nursing. Families are taught the same skills they will use between visits — and asked to demonstrate them back before we sign off.
Emergency & Hurricane Preparedness
Every client is assigned an emergency priority level based on how dependent they are on skilled care, oxygen, or powered equipment. Before hurricane season we review evacuation plans, medication and supply stockpiles, oxygen backup, and emergency contacts. In a life-threatening emergency staff call 911 first, then notify family and the physician.
